It is so hard to believe that another year has come and gone. I hope that you have found the Kindergarten News helpful to keep you informed about the happenings in our class. In fact, I would really appreciate your honest opinion as to whether or not this type of format is useful to you as a parent. Please e-mail me any comments and let me know.
It has been my pleasure to begin your child’s adventure into public education. Thank you for all your support and help in our classroom activities and with your child’s learning. Please remember, you, as parents, truly are your child’s first and best teacher!
Final Events
Monday, June 24th – The Kindergarten Grade One picnic in Kin Park. Please meet at school by 8:54 as usual for attendance. We will walk to the playground area together. Your child brought home a yellow slip of paper on Thursday with confirmation of the item to bring/send. Please bring the item with you or leave it at the front primary doors and a few parents who are driving will transport all items to the park. Kinden’s dad is transporting a large company BBQ, so we will not need any others. If you have offered to help, please join in as needed.
The weather is planning to cooperate! Please ensure your child is dressed for a morning outside with appropriate sun protection and footwear for outside play. We will be starting to eat at approximately 10:30 and will be back at the school by noon.

Tuesday, September 3rd – School begins for 2013-2014. Students will
return to last year’s teacher (our current room) for this first half-day of
the year. Class lists are compiled after we know how many students will be
attending next year. If you know that your child will not be attending Bert
Ambrose in September, please inform the school

June 14th 2013: Kindergarten News
What an exciting start to our week with the community
tour to three landmarks in Fort St. John. The children had
excellent tours from Mr. Krezanoski at Safeway, from
Corporal Shelkie at the RCMP station, and an exciting run at the
walking track in the Pomeroy Sports Centre. Pushing the milk
jugs in the large refrigeration area was a highlight
for many at Safeway and of course the snacks. Most
also felt that a night in jail with no bed, pillow,
blanket or private bathroom would not be fun!
Thank you to those parents who have sent a photo of the front of your home
(approximately 3×5 or 4×6). If you have not yet done so, please do. If
you do not have a printer, e-mail a simple picture and I will print it this
weekend. Each time we had planned to tour the school perimeter, we received
a huge rain shower. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative this week
so we can walk around our school community and to some nearby housing.
As we continue our theme on community and review our discussion about Fort
St. John, we will be taking a trip on the city bus system this Thursday
morning. While on the trip we will look for landmarks and other places in our
community. We are looking for 3 or 4 parents to go with us. Look for this
final permission slip early next week.
Friday marked the annual Primary Fun Day. Despite the down pour that ended
the morning, most centres were completed by the children. Tug of Wars will
be held Monday. Thanks to all the parents who came out to help and support
this event. Of course, thanks to the “Big Helpers” who ran the centres.
As part of “Pay It Forward”, the K classes received a
special visit from three local firefighters. How exciting
for the children to each get in the fire truck and try out
the horn or siren! We also got to try on some real fire
helmets and boy are they heavy, just like the coats,
pants and boots! How well this fit in with our community
work. Your children were thinking how they could pay it
forward to someone else.
I must also take this opportunity to say thank you all for the wonderful surprise birthday celebration. I truly was surprised as I thought the kids had created a card with your help! Thanks for all your amazing comments and the gift. I will make use of the gift card this summer and think of the fantastic year we all had together!

May 31, 2013
This week, we completed our work on life cycles with
the completion of our books called, “The Seed”. If you
haven’t already had the opportunity, please ask your
child to read the book she/he created. Of course the
children were very excited to take home their pumpkin
plants Thursday after school. We have talked about their continued
growth and we thought some plants were beginning to have tiny
flower buds! It was great to hear that Quinton’s has already found a
home in his garden!
We have been exploring collections and looking at whole, part, part up to ten.
For example, 8 can be broken up to 5 and (+) 3, or 1 +7, or 4 + 4. These are
powerful ways to help your child think of what makes up different amounts.
We have started talking more about the groups we belong to like our family.
We have found out that we all belong to several groups and that groups can
change over time. We are all part of the Room 7 class and of Kindergarten,
but next year we will be part of a new group (class and grade). Many of us will
continue to be Ambrose Gators. Ask your children to talk about what other
groups they belong to or would like to belong to in the future.
We will look more at our community, Fort St. John and the places in the
community next week. Our first adventure is the field trip we have planned
for Monday. We will also be walking around the perimeter of our school yard
next week. As we go we will use the opportunity to review street and sidewalk
safety. To help with our exploration, would you please send a photograph of
the front of your home (approximately 3×5 or 4×6) to school early next week?
Our show and tell next week will focus on places in our community. Please help
your child think of a place in the community that they have been or a place
where people work and play. Bringing an item or picture may help remind them
and focus their discussion.

Kindergarten News May 31, 2013
This week, started with much excitement as we returned
to school to find many of the painted lady butterflies
already emerged from the chrysalises. After the week
of observing, we knew it was time to release the
butterflies to mate, lay their eggs and then die as they
have reached the end of their life cycle. It was an
exciting time this morning when the butterflies were
released by our three classes. I am not sure who was
more excited, the children or some of the parents! We
created some cool butterflies with our patchwork
project from earlier this month and completed life cycle
projects of both the moth and the butterfly.
We have noticed how much longer the life cycle of our pumpkin plants is. The
seedlings have now all been transplanted and each child is responsible for
watering their own plant in preparation for bringing home near the end of next
week. Hopefully you have a spot to plant them shortly after coming home.
We also had an opportunity to observe another lifecycle as we visited Mrs.
McKinnon’s grade one class where her children showed us how to hold their
chicks and/or ducklings. This was very exciting! The children then stayed to
visit Mrs. McKinnon who is one of the Grade One teachers, but not necessarily
their teacher next year.
In our question of the day, we have been creating some number sentences to
explain our thinking. Some examples are ten and five more makes 15 or the
fast way to write this is 10 + 5 = 15 or 10 and 2 more is 12 (10 + 2 = 12).
In the next while we will be wrapping up our work on life cycles. We will
continue to explore the environment around us with a focus on observing the
groups we belong to and the community around us.

this week, we will continue next week with items found in the community
around us.

Kindergarten News: May 24, 2013
This week we learned about the characters for the letter Z, z (zed not zee since we are Canadians). These new characters are Zackary and Zena, the two zipping, zooming zebras, and their zookeeper Zeke. When you see z, think of zipping your jacket and make the /z/ sound. Although this marks the last of our letter alphabet sounds, we will continue to introduce new characters and their sounds in the last month of kindergarten.
This week, we have continued our focus on life cycles. Our pumpkin plants have turned into seedlings and each student now has their own seedling to water and look after in preparation for when they go home. So please think of a garden spot for these sprawling plants. We discovered that our caterpillars all became chrysalises over the weekend. We now wait as they are developing into butterflies! On Friday, we created an egg, caterpillar or chrysalis out of ‘make-it’ crafts. Were you able to identify the ‘treasures’ that were brought home today?
We had a good time exploring Kin Park area on Thursday afternoon. We found many things that are growing and living! We also discovered many of our own things by touching, poking, rolling, and exploring. Ask your child to tell you about some of the exciting discoveries they made. The old tennis court seemed to generate a great deal of excitement!
We have again been comparing results from our ‘Questions of the Day’ and have been comparing sizes. You can help support your child’s learning by encouraging the use of comparative terms like, tall, taller, tallest, and by continuing to pose questions that encourage your child to question and wonder.
The students have done well as ‘big kids’ at our dismissal time. If there have been any concerns regarding pick up, please let me know.
As we move into the last weeks of school, our show and tell will no longer accommodate any toys or stuffies. Next week, our focus will be on something that your child has found in nature.

Kindergarten News May 20th 2013:
This week we reviewed the sound of Ww and were introduced to Winkie Walrus who likes to
eat wonderful, wiggly worms! We contrasted the worms with our caterpillars that arrived
this week. Will worms turn into butterflies?
Since our caterpillars arrived on Tuesday, they have been eating steadily and
some have already made their way to the top of our netted container to
create a chrysalis. The butterfly song we sang with Paul Hann has been an
awesome teacher of the metamorphosis that the butterfly will go through.
Thanks to all the parents, grandparents and family who came to watch us
perform our song on Wednesday. We were really excited to see you!
We have also continued all the wondering about the growth of the pumpkin
seeds. As one of the children said on Monday when discovering that the seeds
had sprouted, “This is the best day ever!” It is a reminder of the excitement
of small miracles that we as adults take for granted and how the ‘wonder” of
life is really all around us if we just take the time to watch and explore.
We took time to again discuss the right number of things and are creating a
class book called, “The Right Number”. We have also been finding and
comparing things that are taller (longer) than us. You can help by using these
terms at home and encouraging your child’s comparison of length, height and
width. We have again added the new word, ‘with’ to our ring words. This gave us the
opportunity to refocus on the sound of ‘th’ and the character ‘the Thick and
Thorny Thing’. We discovered some new sentences can be created with our
ring words. See how many you can make at home. Ask your child to share
their journal with you during the next Noisy Reading time as we are now trying
to create some sentences in our work. In recognition of our growth this year, we will be making some changes in our
routine as we prepare for Grade One. The children will now be having snack
just before recess in the morning and then eating at lunch. We will no longer
be having an afternoon snack during class. As well, we will be changing our
routine for dismissal. The children and I have been gradually working towards
end of the day dismissal after the bell. Starting on Tuesday, the students will be coming down the hall on their own and meeting you or your designate outside where we normally dismiss. For the first week or so, I will follow down just after them to help out if there are any problems. The children will no longer need to tell me before they go with you, their sibling or alternate. If you feel there may be some issues that require further discussion about this, please let me know.
Next week our focus will be on the /z/ sound, the letter Zz (zed for us Canadians) and the characters Zackary and Zena Zebra. We will also continue to observe and record our observations about both the butterflies and the pumpkin plants. Weather permitting, we will go to the Kin Park area on Wednesday afternoon to look, explore and wonder about the world around us. Please ensure appropriate dress and footwear on that day.

Kindergarten News: May 10, 2013
Kindergarten continues to be an exciting and interesting place to be! This week we learned about Nellie Newt and to think of nibbling to help remember the /n/ sound. We also searched outside for other living things and found grass, dandelions, trees, beetles, bees, and lots of ants!
We reviewed our book from the fall about pumpkins and were reminded of the seeds we saved from our Halloween jack-o-lanterns. We broke open the seed coats to find the green seed inside and also planted some of the other seeds in soil. We put two extra seeds in a zip lock bag with a damp paper towel to see if they would grow. Some of us predicted yes and some no. By Thursday, we could not see any growth in our planted seeds, but in the bag the roots had emerged. No matter which way the seed was, we could see that the roots always go down. We have started making an observation book and will continue to observe and record the growth of our pumpkin seeds next week. Ask your child if he or she has a prediction about what will happen with our seeds next.
We have been talking about butterflies and will soon be getting some caterpillars in our class to follow their growth. Right now, we have been learning the song “Butterflies” written by Paul Hann and a former Grade One class of Mrs. Harcombe’s from Bert Ambrose. We will be performing this next Wednesday for parents in the school gym and hope you can all make it.
We ended our week with a Rylea’s special show and tell guest, Uncle Neal who played his three banjos for us. He then let everyone try out the banjos and do some “mean pick’n’ along with him! We have some budding banjo pickers!
We worked on some surprises for our moms and used the recycled paper we made with Mrs. Court a few weeks ago. We hope you like our gifts. Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms!
Next week, we will focus on the sound of Ww as we continue to wonder about the world around us. I wonder what the new character will be?

May 5th: Kindergarten News
This week we were introduced to our new characters, Edgar
Elf and Ellie Elephant for the letter E, e. Edgar likes to
exercise and this helps us remember the short e sound. Ask
your child to sing this fun song to you and review the songs of
Farley Fox, The Ghosts and Griselda Green, and Hippy Hippo
which have the same tune.
We enjoyed reading about Elmer the patchwork elephant this week. We
discussed how it is good to be unique and that we are all different people. We
created our own patchwork tissue art designs and will use these again next
week.
We read an interesting book, called, “The Right Number of Elephants” and
have been discussing how the right number of things can change depending on
situations and who you are. We will continue to discuss this concept next
week. You can help support this learning by talking about situational changes
that affect number amounts. For example, the right number of pancakes to
eat may be one if they are large, but six if they are small. Would the number
change if it is the child or dad?
We added the sight words ‘to’ and ‘play’ to our ring words and created some
new sentences. As you are reviewing these words, ask your child to get ready
to make the beginning sound if the word is challenging. Please also remember
that not all words can be sounded out. This is why it is so important to read
for meaning rather than just saying words when doing the home reading books.
We are working on the strategy that if you get stuck or make a mistake, good
readers go back to the last capital to read again to make sure the sentence
makes sense. Thanks for all your support with these programs.
Next week we will be focusing on the sound of the letter Nn. We will begin to
observe living things that are around us and how they change. Maybe if the
snow stays away, we can find that there will again be living things on our
playground!

April 29th: Kindergarten News:
We have had a very exciting week with our focus on Jeans
Day and selling buttons in support of BC Children’s Hospital.
I received many comments from staff throughout the
school about what a wonderful job our kindergarten
students did as champions for Jeans Day, BC Children’s
Hospital and sick kids! We appreciated making connections to the use of this
hospital by children in our class and friends. Together our school community
was able to raise $1,461.20. Well done Kindergarten Champions, Bert
Ambrose students and of course all the parents for your tremendous
support. Our class also had 100% participation in wearing jeans on
Thursday. We enjoyed learning about the letter J, j, Jenny Jaguar and the
juggling action which cues us to make the j sound. We also reviewed Kimmy Kangaroo, Ichabod Ichthyosaurus, and Lizzy Lamb
who have the same tune. We played match up games with ‘ten frames’ and played join up games in our
math work which involved counting and adding on, recording numbers and
comparing numbers. Discussions about amounts, guesses and 1 or 2 more or
less are all ways to help further your child’s sense of number.
We have continued to look at the world around us and started the week off
by discussing Earth Day and what we can all do to help the earth. We
realized that we already do a lot in terms of recycling and reusing. The class
also noticed how much the playground changed in looks this week with the
melting of the snow, showing of the grass in the field and in the past two
days the drying up of some muddy areas.
Next week, we will continue to explore changes that happen as spring
progresses. Our letter focus will be the short e sound as in egg.

April 19th: Kindergarten News
This week our focus letter sound was for K, k and our character, Kimmy Kangaroo who blows kisses and never kicks a kid! When you see a K, think of blowing kisses and make /k/ sound. We talked about kids, BC Children’s Hospital, and being champions for kids and the hospital. Our motto is “Kids helping kids”. We made our own posters in a blue jean shape and shared ideas about the hospital in Vancouver. Today, and continuing next week, the ‘kids’ will be selling buttons for $5.00 each.
The children enjoyed exploring the water and melting snow and ice outdoors. We have been noticing and questioning changes that have occurred with the melting snow and new snow that has come this week. Please continue to discuss ideas and ask “I wonder” questions that encourage exploration and discussion. We have talked a lot about outside exploration time with me and the difference this is from recess play time. I appreciate that some of the children are coming home with wet boots, but we are working at making good decisions based on our footwear and clothing. Thank you for continuing to check backpacks daily and ensure clothing is replaced in case there is a need for the next day.
We ended the week with a gym assembly and presentation from Science World. Please ask your child to share some of his/her thoughts and discoveries from their visit.
As we move towards Jeans Day, our letter sound for next week will focus Jj for jeans and of course our new character.

Kindergarten News April 12, 2013
This week we learned about the characters Rosie Raccoon and Rhino Ralph. The children enjoyed learning our new song and to think of the riding action when making the /r/ sound. It is important to differentiate between this and the sound of the ‘ar’ chunk.
We have begun collecting and observing rocks this week. The children have found many ‘special’ rocks and we have brought them inside to share and talk about. We have noticed they are hard, rough, smooth, bumpy, sharp, and sparkly. Many even change how they look when they are wet! Mrs. Ouellette brought and shared the rocks she has collected from her travels and we look forward to others bringing and sharing special rocks. You can help support your children’s learning by encouraging them to describe and share their findings with you.
In the weeks ahead we will continue to explore our surroundings outside. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Because of this exploration and the wet weather, I ask that each child bring and store a set of extra clothes in a plastic bag that will be kept in their cubby. If wet clothes come home, please send clean replacement items. As well, you may wish to have your child dress in clothes that are okay to get wet. Of course, we will avoid wet exploration on Tuesday the 16th which is the class group photo day.
On Friday, we added two new cards to our ring words with the addition of ‘The’ and ‘the’, which we have focused on in during our reading lessons in class. Again we talked about this being a sight word that you must remember rather than a sound out word. Thank you for remembering to review these words, create sentences with the cards and for having your children return the ring words to their backpacks.
We really enjoyed our field trip to the Cultural Theatre to view the school’s Missoula performance of ‘The Secret Garden’. The children in the play did very well and of course we were most impressed to see our friends Hope, Mia and Rylea as the ‘blooming plants’ in the garden. Well done, girls!
Next week we will continue on our theme of rocks and our surroundings. We will focus on the letter and sound of Kk as we learn about our new character.

Ready, Set, Learn These sessions for three and four year olds and their parents. Sessions are facilitated by Mrs. Shuffler with special guests. These are held from 1:30 -2:30 in our school library. Kindergarten News April 5, 2013
Welcome to the spring (or is it winter?) term of kindergarten in Room 7! It was exciting to return to school and see all our friends. This week we focused on the letter Q, q sound and learned about our new character Quentin Quail who is a quarterback! To remember the sound, get ready to throw your football and say the /kw/ sound.
We also have started having some “questions” to answer as either yes or no. (Please note that we added the word “no” to our ring words on Thursday.) Next week we will continue a “question of the day” as our morning sign in instead of putting our names on the school bus. We will also spend more time comparing the results.
This week, we have reviewed dot formations (as on dice) and have discussed other dot formations that we sight recognize in chunks (4 and 2, or 3 in a line, or 2 on top and 1 below). We have also been introduced to “Power of 10” cards (based on a ten frame) and will continue to explore these in the weeks to come as we do more work on “chunking” of numbers (5 and 1 more makes 6; 10 with one missing makes 9).
We ended our week, by sewing our initials on a “quilt” square. Needles can be fun, but tricky to not poke your finger! Check out our class ‘quilt’ when you visit next week.
As the weather changes, please help ensure your child is dressed for the weather conditions of the day (or for the hour) as we have seen many changes this week. We have gotten low on tissues, so if you have not yet sent a box of tissue this year for the students to share, we would appreciate your help.
Next week we will be focusing on the letter sound of Rr. I wonder what the character will be. Please remember that the red group has show ’n tell on Monday.

Kindergarten News: March 8, 2013
This week we have learned about the letter L, l and
Lizzy Lamb and Lonnie Lion. Ask your child to tell you
the story of these characters and if Lonnie wanted to
be friends with Lizzy. Please help to reinforce that
the letter sound doesn’t have the “el” sound in it (lamb
as compared to elephant). Reviewing the action and
saying the sound will help.
We have continued to observe and record weather conditions. The children all
agreed that March came in like a lamb, but during this week, many days were
lion days! We will continue to record the weather conditions each day. Your
help talking about weather conditions and noting changes that occur is
appreciated. To go along with our studies, we enjoyed creating lions and
lambs out of paper plates.
Of course many other things that we like and love start with L. We read
several stories about leprechauns. Leprechauns can be mischievous, but fun!
On Friday we created Potato Head leprechauns. Make sure you check out the
creativity!
Next week, we will not be focusing on a letter, but will be discussing the
characters for two chunks; the ‘ar’ and ‘ch’ chunks as in March. Our Show and
Tells should be something that has an either of these chunks. For example,
checkers, broach, art, star, etc.
This will also be our last K News until after Spring Break. During the first
week back we will be learning about the sound of Qq. So at this time, I would
like to wish you all a fun spring break and a Happy Easter!

Kindergarten News: March 1, 2013
This week we learned about the character Yakety Yak and the consonant sound of Yy. This can be a tricky sound for the children as they often think Y (why) – /wh/, so please remember to get them to focus on Yakety’s yo-yo action when they say the sound. We received the new ring word, ‘yes’ and talked about how this little word is also part of ‘yesterday’ from our calendar. We also discussed the ending vowel sound like in ‘yummy’ and noticed some of our friends’ names contain this letter and create different vowel sounds.
The children are learning more to focus on their observations about our weather and keep records. On Thursday, we were introduced to the poem, “Lamb or Lion” and we talked about the old tale about March coming in like a lion or lamb. Each child was asked to check and remember today, March 1st’s weather so they can report to the class on Monday. We even talked about your child making a quick written record to help them remember. Next week we will add a new sticker feature to our weather record for March. To go along with this, we will be working on the letter sound of Ll. Try to guess the new character!
We enjoyed our last skating trip to the Pomeroy Sport Centre with Ms. Yorke’s class. Thanks to all of you who showed up to help out and/or skate with us. Also, the class was able to be introduced to Yoga with Miss Sherry on Thursday. We hope to have her back to share some more yoga with our students in the months ahead.
Pink Day was a focused reminder of anti bullying. This week, we had more in depth discussions about bullying, read stories on this topic and shared ideas to help avoid and deal with bullying behaviour. The virtue assembly also helped the students see concrete examples of how to work together and stand up against bullying.
As you may have noticed, our class has gradually been coming for dismissal closer to the 2:45 bell. We will continue to do this as we move into the
spring term. If this creates an issue for your pick up arrangements, please contact at the school or via e-mail.

Kindergarten News: February 24, 2013
This week we studied the letter I, i and its short vowel sound as in ‘is’. We learned about Ichabod Ichthyosaurus (pronounced IK-thee-oh-SAWR-us) who became itchy when inchworms inched inside him. We also reviewed the long sound of i as in the word ‘I’.
The children were also introduced to two new words, is/Is and Here/here. We learned that these two words are truly sight words, we can get our mouths ready to make the first sound, but we cannot sound them out, we just have to remember them! We have used these words to write simple sentences and therefore have looked at how these words need uppercase letters when they come at the beginning of a sentence. You can help at home by encouraging the children to notice these common sight words in their home reading books and by encouraging the children to create sentences with their ring words.
We have been discussing how to look at things as scientists and notice the ‘interesting’ things. We have been observing the weather conditions each day and have been introduced to recording our discoveries with an “X marks the spot”. In the next few weeks, we will continue to look at the temperature and weather each day as we make observations of our surroundings and changes that occur over time.
The children have shown an excitement in ‘instruments’. This was a fairly common show and tell theme throughout the week. We played with and explored the instruments, created instruments out of recyclables and common household items, and the children even created a marching band! This has allowed children to explore sound and the creation of a variety of sounds.
On Friday, we started taking an inventory of some of the things in our class. I started this question by posing a problem of “I have been wondering how many tables we have in the class?” The children had a lot of guesses and initially said “5”, because of our round tables. However, we found out after a closer investigation that we had many more. (Plus we had to think about what defined a table; perhaps a clear cut concept to us, but the children had their own ideas!) Ask your child to tell you how many tables we do have. This project is a way to think about counting and how it relates to our real world.
You can help support our math learning, by posing these types of questions at home. I wonder how many forks or pieces of cutlery we will need for dinner tonight; how many matchbox toy vehicles do you have; how many steps from the truck to the school?
Next week, our letter focus will be the consonant sound of Yy as in yellow. As well we will have a special guest in the school, Ms. Sheri Anderson who will be teaching yoga to the gym classes. Our class is scheduled to go on Thursday!

Kindergarten News February 15, 2013
Although this was a short school week, we had many activities squeezed in:
Hundred’s Day, Valentine’s Day and ‘Flying Bob’ filled our week!
To coincide with Valentine’s Day, we were introduced to Victor
Vampire and the letter Vv. Victor plays the violin and vanishes from
his violet van. We also made valentines and learned how to fold,
draw and cut them. We used this time to talk about our families and
how much we like and of course love the people in our family.
Hopefully the valentine card made for you, got home and delivered!
In celebration of 100 Day, we read 100 books in Noisy Reading. The children were
both shocked and excited that they could do this. It is much easier when you work
as a team and we sure appreciated those parents who helped us. Thanks for
sending such great collections. We enjoyed exploring and counting these together
in groups of ten. The children are beginning to see that grouping items into ‘tens’
helps to make the counting easier! We also had a great time visiting all the classes.
We could not have done this without the great support of the parents. I especially
appreciate your support making cupcakes, helping with the cupcake decorating,
taking groups around and of course all your work with the set-up and clean-up. We
are truly blessed at Ambrose to have such giving and supportive parents!
Next week we will focus on the short vowel sound of Ii as in itchy and the letter
Ii. This can again be a tricky sound and we look forward to all the show and tell
items with short i. Of course, there also can be confusion between I as a letter
and the word I.
For clarification, in the Home Reading program, it is not necessary to return the
red duo-tang, unless you are ready to return the home reading book for exchange.
Sometime during the week we will be able to include the new character
page for home review. Also please note that the children have two
new ring word cards. I have included two versions of My and my so
that the children will begin focusing more attention on when to use
upper case and lower case forms as they build their sentences.

This week we enjoyed our focus on the letter X, x and being introduced to the new characters Max the Ox and Felix Fox who like to box and then relax on their furniture made of wax. So when you see x, hold both arms up high for awhile, then think of relaxing and make the ‘ks’ sound.
The children each created their own hand x-rays as crafts using black paper and ‘Q-tips’ the show their bones. Come and check out our cool x-rays at school!
During the past weeks we have also been reviewing rhyming sounds like ox, box, and fox. As well, we have read books, played various games and puzzles that encourage rhyming. Please continue to encourage rhyming and point out rhymes that occur in books that you read and in your child’s home reading. One of the songs we’ve been singing is to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it” and goes like this.

Next week, we will be working on the letter sound of Vv as we focus on Valentine’s Day activities. Students in our class will deliver valentines to each bag in the morning during Noisy Reading. We have also been notified of a special presentation in the gym on Thursday afternoon from 1:30 – 2:30. Therefore our party activities will be limited to sharing valentines and eating snacks as we only have 40 minutes. You may want to send your child with a smaller lunch and limited desserts to avoid over eating.
Please help us prepare for 100 Day by exploring collections this weekend. Have your child bring in a collection of 100 things on Wednesday morning to
explore with the class. Be prepared to stay a little longer on Wednesday morning as we read 100 books with your help during Noisy Reading!
Mr. McCracken has sent a special note regarding the coin drive for Marshall happening next week. Also please find a copy of your child’s interim progress report inside his/her pack sack.

Farley Fox was our new character for this week and helped us focus on the letter F, f. Farley is a bit of a show-off who can fish for food and fiddle for fun all at the same time!
We have been focusing on our family and have been discussing the people in our family and their relationship to each other. We have been identifying both immediate and extended family.
We completed some drawings of our family and an activity that identifies the number of people in our family. Next week we will continue our work on families. We will compare sizes and composition. We will discuss differences and similarities. You can help support our learning by discussing your child’s family relationships.
We ended our week on a positive and healthy note by creating a friendship fruit salad. The dragon fruit was one that many children did not know much about. Thanks for the great tasting fruits that you supplied. Fantastic!
Today the children have also begun a home reading program. Please refer to the letter in the front of each red duo-tang that explains the program. The red duo-tang will now come back with the little home reading book inside whenever your child is ready for a new book. If you have any questions about this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. We also added a new word to our ring words. Please remember that ring words should be kept in the little zip lock bag and returned in your child’s backpack each day. I am hoping this habit will help us have the ring at school whenever we need them and at home whenever you need them.
Next week our letter sound of the week will be Xx. Our main focus will be the ending sound. For this letter children may bring a show and tell item that ends with x.

Kindergarten News: January 25, 2013
The children were introduced to our character Actress Annie, the song,
the action and the sound of short a. This short sound for ‘a’ is the sound
we want to teach the children when reading the word “a” in a sentence.
For example, I see a bear. We talked about the “fancy, funny” a that is
sometimes in books, games or on charts. Of course, A also stands for
our school Ambrose and the Ambrose Alligators!
This week we worked on early reading and discussed that there are two ways to
learn to read words. Remembering the word (a sight word like our names) and using
sounding to say and blend the sounds together to read the word (like pup, pop,
mom). We learned to sound out “am” by putting Actress Annie’s ‘a sound’ with Mimi
Mermaid’s ‘m sound’ to read the word “am”. The children reviewed the sight word
“I” and creating an “I am” sentence.
We were also introduced to a collection of words we call our “Ring Words”. The
children will have brought them home today to read over the weekend. The
children have learned to read them on the ring, but also to take them off to make a
sentence. Please help support their learning by making up and reading a
sentence with them and reviewing the words on the ring. It is important to change
the order of the words and get children to focus on the first sound so that they
are not strictly memorizing the order of the words. We have started with a few
words and will add words as time goes on.
We were each introduced to ‘little books’ and learned to identify the parts of a
book. We learned how it is important to first look at the cover and make a
prediction or guess about what the book will be about. Read the title and then do a
‘book look’ through the whole book and talk about the pictures. Then with support
go back and read the book together. At this point our books basically follow the
same pattern on each page. We also learned that good readers point once for each
word and that they go back and read again from the beginning if they
make a mistake!
In math we also explored Annie’s ants and used these to count
how many ants were in a collection and compare sizes (using
words like more, less, and fewer). We worked on the concept
of ‘conservation of number’ (knowing the number of objects
stays the same despite the arrangement unless some are added or
removed). You can do a simple assessment of your child’s sense of conservation of
number by presenting a collection, asking how many, then rearranging the formation
and again asking how many. You can help to further develop this understanding by
providing opportunities to explore, estimate, and count a variety of collections.
Thank you for your help with the Healthy Food Challenge. Although our students
had 100% healthy snack participation, our older buddies did not do as well.
Next week our letter sound of the week is Ff. We will begin
a theme on our family and be talking about a special day on
February 2nd.

We have had a fabulous week! Mrs. Pomeroy taught us some great dances like Seven Jumps, Off to the Rodeo, Old Glory, Jump Jim Joe, Kinderpolka, and Scatter Dance. Thanks to parents and families who came out to help learn these with us and those who came to the family dance on Thursday evening. Thanks also to all the parents who came with us for our first skating time at the Pomeroy Sport Centre. Thursday was a tiring day, but a lot of fun!
Just like we love to dance, our new character Daisy Dragon likes to dance. Remember when you see D or d, think of dancing and raise your hands over your head in our ‘dancing’ action and say the ‘d’ sound. We worked on other activities that focus on the d sound. In math, we focused on dots on dominoes and on dice. We played domino games that match up the dots. We also made dot cards that contain the die patterns for games of match and memory that we will play in the future. Playing any games with dice or dominoes is a fun way to support your child’s ability to recognize numbers in ‘chunks’ (i.e. 3 and 3 is 6 or 4 around the outside and 1 more in the middle is 5).
Next week, we will be changing our schedule. The Red group’s show and Tell will occur each Monday. There will be no show and tell on Wednesday unless there is a holiday or non instructional day during the week. Our upcoming sound of the week is short a as in apple and the letter Aa.

January 14th 2013
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year
everyone!
It was certainly nice to get back to school, to all our
friends and the familiar routine. The children had a
busy week as we focused on the letter M, m and the
character Mimi Mermaid. Mimi moves her magic mop
and makes the m sound. Ask your child to sing this
song to you and show the actions that accompany the words. Please continue
to review the characters, letter sounds, actions, names, and songs of all
the letters we have covered so far.
We enjoyed creating a list of things that begin with M, m. Of course, the
most important thing the children learned to spell is mom. The children
learned to do a directed draw of mom and to use the letters they know to
sound and spell this word. I know many of the moms have checked out their
portraits. It’s like looking in a mirror! We practiced printing both letter
Mm’s, by starting at the top. Remember to encourage that upper case M is a
‘frog jump’ letter and to make a lower case m, you must first dive down and
then swim back up. We also created Marvelous Marble Masterpieces. Ask
your child to tell you how he/she created his/her artwork. They definitely
are masterpieces!
In math (another m word), the children were introduced to ten frames and
played a game called “Monkeys jumping on the bed”. This is a game
that continues to have the students sight recognize the die
combinations and to think about dot combinations on a ten
frame (a chunking strategy). We will continue to work
with ten and five frames in the weeks ahead. Look for our
class book that integrates this math game with literacy.
Each child created a student page for our book called,
“How many monkeys jumping on the bed?”
This week some important notices went home. Please take
time to contact the Health Unit regarding screening (dental, hearing, sight,
etc.) and immunization boosters at your earliest convenience. Also look for
the pink PAC notice that went home today.
We finished off our week by making some magnificent milkshakes! M…m….m! Ask your child to make one for you at home…a nice treat with healthy milk and fruit (… and of course ice-cream)!
Next week will be another exciting week for us! Our focus will be on the letter Dd and dancing. Mrs. Angie Pomeroy ‘The Dance Lady’ will work with all classes each day. Parents and family members are welcome to attend classes and will be encouraged to join in. We will be paired with Mr. Eastwood’s Grade One class from 11:20 to 11:50. This will culminate with a School Community Dance for students, family and staff on Thursday evening.
Now that the students are familiar with routines, we will be going to the library on Tuesdays and Fridays each week. Children who return their book will be able to exchange for a new book each time we go.
Upcoming Dates
Week of January 14th to 18th – Dance Residency with Mrs. Pomeroy from 11:20 to 11:50.
Thursday, January 17th – Skating at the Pomeroy Sport Centre (Enerplex) with Mrs. Watchel’s Grade 4/5 class. The bus leaves at 9:00 am. Children must wear skates, helmets and gloves. Parents are invited to join us and help tie skates as well as skate with us on the ice. According to city guidelines, all those on the ice must have skates.
Pink shirt and other anti bullying are orders due.
The Ambrose School Community Dance is from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the gym. Come with your family and join the fun!
Friday, January 18th – Mr. Ouellette away at Early Learning Collaboration meeting for the afternoon. Mrs. MacDonald will TOC.
