I’m very excited to present this year’s Family Literacy Day celebration.
Since 1999, communities across Canada have annually recognized the importance of family literacy on January 27th. This year, Fort St. John will be celebrating Family Literacy Day with a week’s worth of exciting activities. All events are free of charge!
Write the Journey: Poetry Workshop with Christy Jordan-Fenton
Christy Jordan-Fenton will facilitate a poetry workshop for youth and families. Originally from rural Alberta, Christy is an accomplished writer of children’s books who now lives in the North Peace.

Discover Cooking!: A Family-Oriented Community Kitchen
Lindsay MacIssac, a clinical dietitian, will teach families how to regularly incorporate delicious and healthy meals into their diets. In this hands-on workshop, families will cook together. This event is made possible through funding by the United Way.

Letter Writing Club
Here’s an opportunity for a family to write a letter or two with other families who are also writing letters. Stationary and creative ideas will be provided at no cost. Connect with those you love by writing a letter or creating a postcard, mail art or anything else that’s mailable.
Date: Thursday, January 26th Time: 4:00pm to 8:00pm Location: North Peace Cultural Centre Multipurpose Room (10015 100 Avenue) Registration: Not required – everyone is welcome to drop in at any time during the event.
Gathering Space: Family Literacy Concert
Experience stories and music from around the world! This event features BC musician, Jacob Verberg. This event is made possible through a collaboration with the Welcoming & Inclusive Communities & Workplaces Program.
Date: Friday, January 27th Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm Location: Whole Wheat & Honey Cafe (10003 100 Street) Registration: Not required – everyone is welcome, but please arrive early because space is limited.
The Great Library Adventure: Film Fest and Campout
Arrive at 6:00pm for a Children’s Film Festival in the North Peace Cultural Centre Carpet Room. The film festival will feature shorts from local filmmaker, Rio Fitch. Then, campout with your family inside the library! Parents and their children will spend a night in the library, surrounded by thousands of books. You can come for the film festival and not stay for the campout, if that suits you too.
The film festival will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. This part of the event is open to everyone! Through his production company “Turtlescape”, Rolla resident Rio Fitch creates stunning short films and still photographs of the natural world surrounding him. Fitch’s children’s films have been screened at festivals around the world, from Chicago to Haida Gwaii. We will feature Fitch’s films for the screening.

Journey to Learning Passport
What is a “Journey to Learning Passport”?
Each time you attend one of the events for Family Literacy Day, you can get your “Journey to Learning Passport” stamped. Any stamp on your passport lets you enter a draw for a $50 gift certificate from Aurora Cinema.
Pick up and drop off your “Journey to Learning Passport” at the Fort St. John Public Library. You can also print off a passport from the following websites:
